The PrimaDonna Aromatic sits at the top of De'Longhi's automatic espresso machine lineup, and it shows. It's built for people who want the full coffee shop menu (espresso, cappuccino, flat white, cold brew, iced latte) at the touch of a screen, without tamping, purging or steaming anything by hand. I've lived with it daily for several weeks, testing both hot and cold drinks. De'Longhi provided me with this machine for testing.

If you read this blog, you know there are many ways to approach coffee. For this review, I put myself in the shoes of the people this machine is made for: the goal isn't the ritual of preparing coffee by hand, but getting a good cup quickly from a fully automatic machine packed with features, with easy maintenance.

With its glossy metal finish, black accents and illuminated 5-inch touchscreen, it looks closer to a high-end kitchen appliance than a basic coffee maker. The machine measures 26.2 cm wide, 46.3 cm deep and 40.7 cm high: plan for that depth on your countertop, plus clearance above to open the bean hopper lid.

Machine overview

Machine design

Build quality is where De'Longhi has clearly invested: the water tank, bean hopper and milk container feel sturdy, and every removable part clicks firmly back into place.

The bean hopper holds up to 500 g of beans, and its lid has a rubber gasket that keeps the beans fresh and muffles the noise of the grinder. The cup grate has small raised plastic elements, so your cup never touches the glossy parts and can't scratch them.

The side panels are made of plastic, with ventilation grilles on the left and at the back. On the right, the 2.2-liter water tank pulls out toward the front, which is far more practical than a tank you have to fill from the back.

Those grilles are there for a cooling fan. It doesn't run all the time and it's very quiet, but you can sometimes hear it faintly, for example right after pulling a coffee.

On top, the cup warmer and the bean hopper lid are glossy. The lid mostly stays closed, so I've put a few plush toys up there, and they look great in its mirror effect.

Machine menus

The machine offers 38 hot and cold recipes, from ristretto to cold brew cappuccino, and Coffee Moments puts your usual drinks forward.

Controls

With so many recipes, I was afraid I'd struggle to find the one I wanted. In fact, the menu is very intuitive: you can sort the drinks between hot and cold and between with or without milk, which greatly speeds up the search. The 5-inch touchscreen is bright and responsive, with none of the lag of cheaper automatic machines, and the drinks sit in a scrollable carousel with clear icons.

Customizing recipes

Open a recipe and an information button gives you its description. You can also adjust the coffee intensity and volume. When you modify a recipe, the machine offers to save it after the extraction, which is really handy: each profile can save its own customized recipes, which aren't shared with the other profiles.

Coffee Moments

My favorite feature of the menu: the machine learns your habits and suggests the drinks you usually order at that time of day. In the morning it offers me an espresso, in the afternoon a cold brew, and in the evening hot milk for my chocolate milk. The time slots that define these moments can be customized to match your own routine. It saves a few taps every day, and the machine feels like it actually knows you.

Custom profiles

You can save up to four user profiles, each with its own saved recipes and its own Coffee Moments, so the machine learns each person's habits separately.

The grinder

The PrimaDonna Aromatic uses a flat burr grinder, not the conical burrs found in most automatic machines, including most of De'Longhi's range. Flat burrs are known for a more consistent grind, and therefore a more even extraction, something you usually only expect from dedicated grinders. I'm surprised De'Longhi doesn't highlight it more in its marketing.

The grinder does not adjust its setting to the drink you select. An espresso normally calls for a finer grind than a pour over, but here every drink uses the same setting, dialed in for espresso, the reference drink on this type of machine, with Bean Adapt to help you set it. On a machine at this price, I expected it to adapt to each drink. There must be technical challenges I'm not aware of that prevented De'Longhi from doing so.

Grind size is only one parameter, though: the amount of water, its temperature, the flow rate and the brewing time matter just as much, and each type of drink has its own brewing method. It's very visible on the cold recipes: the cold brew comes out almost drop by drop, while the iced coffee flows much faster.

Adjusting the grinder without Bean Adapt

To set the grind manually, go to Settings › General settings › Grinder settings › Settings and move step by step from one setting to the next. This keeps the burrs from tightening on coffee beans while they aren't turning, which could damage the grinder.

Bean Adapt technology

Bean Adapt automatically tunes the brewing parameters (grind reference, water temperature, pre-infusion time) to the bean you've loaded, from a light filter-style roast to a dark Italian blend. You register the bean, give it a name, and the machine recalculates its recipe whenever you select it.

For anyone who isn't a coffee geek, it's a real game-changer: no more guesswork with each new bag, and switching between two or three roasts during the week is just a tap away.

Mobile app

The My Coffee Lounge app lets you manage the machine (health status, statistics on your coffees), turn it on and start a coffee remotely, and browse a wide choice of creative recipes, hot or cold.

The first time, the app was terribly slow; it got much better afterwards, probably once its data was cached on the phone. To be honest, I rarely use it, but it's an appreciable bonus. It's free on Google Play and the App Store.

Extraction and drinks

What matters in the end is what ends up in the cup. I tested a hot drink, a cold drink, the milk system and the hot water modes, with a refractometer and a thermometer to go further than my palate.

A hot drink: espresso

With good beans, the espresso from this machine is pleasant overall, and frankly better than in many places where I've had coffee. I found nice aromas and good clarity, with little acidity. Compared with the espressos I usually drink from my La Pavoni or my Lelit Mara X V2, though, it tastes under-extracted.

The refractometer confirms this impression. I measured an espresso with a DiFluid R2 Extract refractometer, which measures the TDS (total dissolved solids) and calculates the extraction yield: 4.97 % TDS and 11.5 % extraction yield. Compared with an espresso pulled on a professional machine (usually around 8 to 12 % TDS and 18 to 22 % extraction), it is under-extracted.

How I measured it: dose, yield and refractometer reading
DrinkDoseYieldTDSExtraction yield
Espresso14 g32.3 g4.97 %11.5 %

To find out the dose, I cancelled a coffee right after grinding: the machine then drops a dry coffee puck into the grounds container, which I weighed. The machine was set to dispense 40 ml of water, but only 32.3 g ended up in the cup, the rest being retained by the puck. The extraction yield is calculated from this weighed value, on a filtered sample.

A cold drink: cold brew

The cold brew pleasantly surprised me: it really tastes like a true cold brew, sweet with low bitterness, rather than a hot coffee that has been chilled. It isn't a 12-hour steep, but for a drink ready in minutes, it comes remarkably close. It also flows out at just 29 °C at the last drops, with water at 25 °C in the tank.

De'Longhi supplies ice cube trays with the machine, which make nicely square cubes.

Clearer ice cubes

Cloudy ice comes from the air dissolved in the water. To drive it out, boil filtered water, let it cool down, then pour it into the trays: your cubes will be much clearer.

Hot and cold milk frothing

The LatteCrema milk system is one of the best parts of this machine. It produces excellent microfoam for cappuccinos and flat whites, and froths cold milk for iced lattes just as well, which isn't a given on automatic machines. A dial on the carafe adjusts the foam density, and the hot milk comes out at 65 °C, the ideal temperature for cow's milk and some plant-based milks.

My evening treat

In the evening, I love making a chocolate milk with the foam set to maximum density: delicious and wonderfully frothy, it's ready in no time without turning on a saucepan, and since the foam takes up a good part of the cup, it uses less milk.

Hot water and tea

Hot water and tea flow through their own dedicated spout, so they never pick up any coffee taste. Hot water follows the coffee temperature setting, while the tea mode offers four temperatures for white, green, oolong and black tea, with cooler water for the more delicate teas so they don't turn bitter.

Measuring the temperature

The machine offers three coffee temperature levels, set in Settings › General settings › Coffee temperature. If you use Bean Adapt, you don't need to touch them: it sets the right temperature automatically for the bean you've registered. De'Longhi doesn't publish their values in degrees, so I measured them, along with the cold recipes, the milk and the tea. For the cold drinks, the water in the tank was at 25 °C.

All my temperature readings: coffee, cold drinks, milk and tea
Drink or settingMeasured temperatureConditions
Coffee, low temperature71.2 °Cin the cup
Coffee, medium temperature84.4 °Cin the cup
Coffee, high temperature87.6 °Cin the cup
Hot water90 °Cin the cup, tea spout
Cold brew29 °Clast drops, water tank at 25 °C
Iced coffeeabout 42 to 43 °Cwater tank at 25 °C
Hot milk (LatteCrema)65 °Cin the cup
Cold milk (LatteCrema)5 °Cin the cup
Tea mode: white tea76.2 °Cin the cup, tea spout
Tea mode: green tea77.6 °Cin the cup, tea spout
Tea mode: oolong84.5 °Cin the cup, tea spout
Tea mode: black tea88.3 °Cin the cup, tea spout

All the hot readings were taken in a cup, so they're approximate: my cup was cooler than the coffee and cooled it down slightly each time, so the real temperature at the spout is a little higher.

Cold drinks: measured without ice

For the cold brew and the iced coffee, these are the temperatures of the coffee as it leaves the spout, without any ice. Poured over ice cubes, the drink in your glass is much colder.

Machine maintenance

General maintenance

The drip tray and grounds container slide out in one motion without tools, and the rinse and descaling cycles are clearly guided on screen, so even a first-time owner of an automatic machine won't feel lost. Some parts are dishwasher-safe, which lets you give the grounds container a deep clean from time to time. Be careful, though: not every part can go in the dishwasher (the cup grille, for example, can't), so check the manual first.

Milk system maintenance

The LatteCrema carafe is very easy to keep clean: it comes apart into a handful of parts that rinse under the tap in under a minute, and the milk carafes can also go in the dishwasher for a more thorough clean. I also appreciated that the machine regularly reminds you to clean the milk container, which avoids forgetting it and creating a health hazard with milk left to sit.

Conclusion

After several weeks of daily use, from a quick morning espresso to an iced cappuccino on a hot afternoon, the PrimaDonna Aromatic impressed me with its consistency and versatility. The cup isn't quite what I get from my Lelit Mara X V2 or my La Pavoni lever machine, where I control every variable, but that's not its purpose: it makes exceptional convenience accessible, hot or cold, at an impressive quality level for an automatic. Feed it fresh specialty beans rather than supermarket blends, and you'll taste the difference, even with Bean Adapt doing the heavy lifting.

If you want one machine for both a black espresso and an iced latte, the PrimaDonna Aromatic is one of the most convincing automatic espresso machines I've tested. You can find it on Amazon or on the official De'Longhi website.
