Ever since I got seriously into specialty coffee, the scale has become the central accessory of my coffee corner. Timemore sent me the Basic 3.0 to test, and after a few weeks of daily use between pour-over and espresso, here is what I think of it.

This scale was sent to me by Timemore. The writing of this article is entirely independent: my evaluation is based solely on my real user experience, with no commercial influence whatsoever.

Presentation — design, dimensions, and available modes

The Timemore Basic 3.0 arrives in clean, carefully designed packaging, true to the brand's aesthetic Timemore. Inside the box, you'll find the scale, a non-slip rubber mat, and a USB-C cable for charging.

The first thing that stands out is the form factor. The Basic 3.0 is 35% smaller and 25% lighter than the Basic 2, and most notably, it is only 2 cm thick — compared to 3 cm for its predecessor. That one centimetre difference may seem trivial on paper, but in practice it changes everything for those who use a scale under an espresso machine with limited clearance. The scale is also noticeably lighter, at 300 g, compared to around 380 g for the Basic 1 and Basic 2. For those who frequently move their equipment around, this is a genuine comfort.

The LED display is readable in all conditions, and the sensor responsiveness is immediately noticeable from the very first use. Charging is done via USB-C, a welcome standard that puts an end to proprietary cables.

The Basic 3.0 offers three operating modes accessible with a simple press of the side button: a standard mode, a pour-over mode, and an espresso mode. Each mode is indicated by a dedicated icon on the screen. Switching between modes is smooth and intuitive, even mid-brew. It is also possible to switch from grams to ounces by pressing the right button five times — an option I never use myself, but one that will delight users accustomed to imperial measurements.

Using in pour-over mode — real-time ratio tracking and automatic timer

The pour-over mode is clearly the feature that surprised me the most during my first use. Once the mode is activated, the scale offers real-time water/coffee ratio tracking: you weigh your beans, press the ratio button, and the scale records your dose. As soon as you start pouring water, the screen displays the current ratio live — for example 1:14.5 or 1:16.2 — without you having to mentally calculate how many grams of water to pour.

What I particularly appreciate is the auto-trigger timer. By pressing the countdown button, the scale waits to detect a flow of water before starting the timer — no more juggling between pouring and pressing simultaneously. For multi-pour recipes, this is a genuine comfort improvement. At the end of the brew, the screen displays a summary: final ratio, total weight of water poured, and brew time. This data remains displayed until a manual reset, allowing you to note it down without rushing.

In terms of accuracy, I compared the Basic 3.0's measurements against my Nano over a series of V60 pour-overs using doses of 15 g for 250 ml of water. The results are perfectly consistent between the two scales, with differences of less than 0.2 g — well within acceptable tolerances for this type of extraction. The sensor responsiveness is noticeably better than what I had observed on my Timemore Black Mirror Nano, and you notice it from the very first pour: the display follows the flow in near real-time, without the slight lag that could sometimes be misleading.

Basic 3.0 — Pour-over mode
5/5
The Basic 3.0's pour-over mode is the best I've used on a scale at this price point. The live ratio tracking and automatic timer genuinely simplify the workflow, without adding unnecessary complexity. Compared to my Nano, it's a real qualitative leap in terms of ergonomics.

Espresso use — lightning tare and automatic detection

This is where the Basic 3.0 delivers, in my opinion, its most impressive performance. Timemore's promise is a tare as fast as more expensive scales — and after several weeks of use, I can confirm this is not just marketing.

In espresso mode, the scale's behaviour changes radically. As soon as a cup or glass is placed on the platform, the tare is performed in under 2 seconds. This responsiveness is crucial in a smooth espresso workflow: you can start the extraction without waiting for the scale to finish stabilising. I tested this responsiveness under real conditions, placing the cup back down several times in a row, and the tare was completed each time before the first drops fell.

The automatic detection of the start of extraction works well in the vast majority of cases: the timer triggers as soon as the scale detects a weight variation from the first drops. End-of-extraction detection stops after a slight latency of a few seconds, which prevents the scale from stopping its measurements if the coffee flows intermittently from the machine. I experienced this many times with my Nano — the scale would stop measuring because the coffee hadn't yet begun flowing in a continuous stream — so this is a genuine improvement over my Timemore Black Mirror Nano. The data remains displayed until a manual reset, allowing you to read the final result without rushing.

Espresso accuracy is excellent. Over a series of extractions at 18 g for 36 g of liquid, the Basic 3.0 consistently displayed measurements in line with my Nano, with negligible differences. The LED screen remains perfectly readable even under strong ambient lighting, and the scale's compact size allows it to slip under most espresso machines without issue.

Basic 3.0 — Espresso mode
5/5
For espresso, the Basic 3.0 is far more pleasant to use than my previous Timemore Black Mirror Nano. Navigating the scale's options is much simpler, the near-instant tare genuinely changes day-to-day use, and the automatic flow detection is reliable enough for regular use. And above all, at a lower price than my Nano.

Conclusion

Timemore Basic 3.0
5/5
The best Timemore coffee scale to date — exceptional responsiveness for its price.

The Timemore Basic 3.0 is, without hesitation, the coffee scale I recommend first to anyone who asks for my advice today. It brings together everything you expect from a specialty scale — precision, responsiveness, well-thought-out dedicated modes — in a compact form factor and at a price that has no serious competition. The near-instant tare in espresso mode is the kind of detail that seems trivial until you get used to it, and after which there's no going back.

Compared to my Timemore Black Mirror Nano, the quality leap is real and immediately noticeable. Compared to high-end scales, the Basic 3.0 closes much of the functional gap at a lower price. It appeals equally to the home barista and to professionals.

Timemore has pulled off a real feat by simplifying menu navigation and offering the scale at a fairly accessible price at a time when everything is getting more expensive. There's no longer any need to wrestle with your scale to find the right mode for a given extraction type. Personally, it's going to replace my Timemore Black Mirror Nano.
