How to properly store your coffee?

Optimizing coffee storage is essential to preserve the integrity of its aromas and avoid common mistakes such as freezer storage or buying in excessive quantities.
Understanding the differences between whole bean and ground coffee is crucial to enjoy each cup to the fullest.

Coffee storage plays a major role in the quality of your beverage.
Leaving it exposed to air leads to rapid oxidation and alters the aromas.
Coffee enthusiasts know that proper storage is just as important as the extraction method.

Warning
It is possible to store your coffee in the freezer, but never open it while it is still cold: condensation would form on the beans and alter their aromas.

  • Whole bean coffee: approximately 5 weeks under good conditions without noticeable loss of aromas.
  • Ground coffee: much more fragile. Ideally, to be consumed within an hour after grinding. Under good conditions, it keeps approximately 10 times less long than whole beans.

  1. Buying in excessive quantities: a stock for 3 or 4 months will inevitably deteriorate.
  2. Storage in the fridge or freezer: humidity, thermal shocks and absorption of odors from other foods.
  3. Using a container that lets air in: oxygen rapidly oxidizes coffee.
Example of improper coffee storage
This method is not suitable for long-term storage

The 4 main enemies of coffee are:

  • Oxygen
  • Light
  • Humidity
  • Heat

The best protection: an airtight, opaque container, stored at around 20°C (68°F).
If the container empties halfway, the remaining air accelerates oxidation.

Roaster bag with valve
Bags with valve are economical and effective

Original airtight bags with one-way valve are inexpensive and effective.
They protect from light and allow oxygen to be easily extracted.

These stainless steel containers push out air as you close them.
They allow you to store whole bean coffee for about 1 month.

CO₂ container for coffee storage
Replacing oxygen with CO₂

They replace oxygen with CO₂, an inert gas that does not oxidize coffee.
Disadvantage: use of disposable cartridges, expensive and not eco-friendly.

Properly storing your coffee doesn’t require a large investment.
You just need to know the basic principles and adopt the right habits to preserve freshness and aromas longer.

Tip
  • Good coffee always starts with proper storage.
  • Store your coffee in small batches to limit air exposure with each opening.
