If, like me, you love crème brûlée-style desserts, you’re going to love this recipe.
The principle is simple: prepare a latte, sprinkle it with brown sugar, then caramelize it using a kitchen torch.
You’ll get a latte with a thin crispy layer of caramel on the surface, which, when mixed with the coffee, will offer incomparable caramelized aromas.
Ingredients and equipment
Ingredients
- Freshly ground coffee
- Whole milk
- Brown sugar
Equipment
- Coffee machine with steam wand (or, alternatively, an electric milk frother affiliate link)
- Kitchen torch affiliate link(or a DIY torch)
- Wide latte cup
- Spoon
Step-by-step preparation
- Prepare a latte:
- Pull your espresso.
- Froth the milk using the steam wand or a frother.
- Gently pour the foam over your espresso.
Sprinkle with brown sugar: apply a thin layer on the foam to prevent the caramel from completely masking the coffee taste.
Caramelize with a blowtorch as you would for a crème brûlée.
When tasting, break the caramel with a spoon to savor the coffee, foam, and caramel together.
This combination offers the impression of enjoying a spoon dessert.

Part of the caramel will melt, enriching the coffee with delicious caramelized aromas.

For an alternative, you can try it with plant-based milk (soy, oat, almond), although I haven’t tried it yet. Share your feedback in the comments!
